Choirbook 13
SHELF MARK | Basilica di San Marco, Libri musicali 13 |
SHORT TITLE | Collection of 21 Anonymous Works: 4 Hymns, 2 Motets and 2 Magnificats (polyphonic); 1 Kyrie, 1 Alleluia and 11 Antiphons (plainchant) |
DESCRIPTION
IDENTIFIER | DOI: 10.14277/unive/vmo/soundstmark/2017/choirbook13 |
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION | 33 sheets In-folio. Maximum sheet size (mm): 476 (height) x 372 (width) Before restoration (2015), the first and last sheets were glued to the front and back covers respectively: both were detached during restoration. In or after the second half of the eighteenth century, the sheets were numbered in pen from 1 to 32 in the upper right-hand corner of each recto, beginning on what is now the second sheet. The manuscript contains five sections, compiled in various periods by four different copyists and subsequently bound together: Section 1: sheets 1–15 (numbered [1]–14): items 1–4 Section 2: sheets 16–18 (numbered 15–17): items 5–17 (plainchant) Section 3: sheets 19–22 (numbered 18–21): item 18 Section 4: sheets 23–27 (numbered 22–26): item 19 Section 5: sheets 28–33 (numbered 27–32): item 20 Three folios originally located between sheets 31 and 32 (numbered 30–31) were cut out and removed. The continuity of musical content indicates that the operation was carried out prior to the compilation of sheet 32. |
BINDING | Cover in paperboard. Corners and spine reinforced with parchment. The binding certainly postdates 1755, as shown by an annotation on the verso of the final sheet, visible only after restoration of the volume in 2015 (insofar as the sheet was previously glued to the back board): see Notes. |

DATING | Section 1 and 2: before 1720 Sections 3, 4 and 5: before 1755 |
COPYIST(S) | Four unknown copyists Copyist 1: Anonymous 7 (sheets 1v–18r, numbered [1v]–17[r]) Choirbook 12 was copied by the same anonymous copyist. Copyist 2: Anonymous 8 (sheets 19v–22r, numbered 18[v]–21[r]) Copyist 3: Anonymous 9 (sheets 23v–27r, numbered 22[v]–26[r]) Copyist 4: Anonymous 10 (sheets 28v–33r, numbered 27[v]–32[r]) |
NOTES | The manuscript brings together four separate bibliographical units, compiled at different times and for different reasons. The first, third and final sections contain polyphony. The second section contains plainchant for Easter Vespers, when the doge and his retinue paid visit to the church of San Zaccaria, and for the feast of Sts Philip and James (1 May), when the procession made its way to the nearby church of the same name. The recto of the final sheet is marked ‘11’ (bottom centre). This number presumably identifies an earlier manuscript of which the sheet in question was probably an endpaper. In ms. 13, the sheet houses the end of the final composition. The following annotation appears on the verso of the final sheet: ‘D. Franc[esco] Bertolini fù sostituito | Custode de Musici l’anno 1755 li 25: maggio | per caduta Appopletica di D. Angelo | Vianello fù custode. –’. This annotation was not visible prior to restoration in 2015, insofar as the sheet was glued to the back board. The letter ‘L’ appears on the exterior of the back board. |
