Choirbook 14

SHELF MARK Basilica di San Marco, Libri musicali 14
SHORT TITLE Collection of 30 Anonymous Works: 25 Hymns, 2 Motets, 2 Antiphons, 1 Magnificat

DESCRIPTION

IDENTIFIER DOI: 10.14277/unive/vmo/soundstmark/2017/choirbook14
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION 98 sheets, in-folio
Maximum sheet size (mm): 519 (height) x 382 (width)

87 sheets numbered per page from 1 to 172 (from verso of first sheet to recto of sheet [87]) + 11 unnumbered sheets (blank staves only)

The manuscript is articulated in two sections: Section A comprises the first ten sheets (pp. 1–19), Section B the remainder of the manuscript. Sheet [62] (pp. 124–125) is a later addition. The bottom of sheet [67] (pp. 134–135) presents a lacuna.
BINDING Hardbound in leather with drypoint engravings and four metal bosses on each side. Traces of two front clasps. Six raised bands (simple twine).

In all probability, the binding dates from the second half of the eighteenth century, when the manuscript was also trimmed. The latter operation caused the partial removal of captions and other annotations from the upper margin. The original binding of the choirbook was not removed during restoration in 2015.
MATERIAL Paper: 2 types

Type 1: Sheets 1–62, 64–98
Chain line width (mm): 33
Watermark 1a (centre of half-sheet): Letter ‘V’
Watermark 1b (centre of half-sheet): Trefoil with letters ‘b’ ‘V’

Type 2: Sheet 63
Chain line width (mm): 33
Watermark 2 (centre of half-sheet): Letter ‘V’

DATING Before 1720?
With some later interventions (see Copyists)
COPYIST(S) Three unknown copyists:

Copyist 1: Anonymous 11 (pp. 1–123 and 126–160), before 1720?

Copyist 2: Anonymous 12 (pp. 124–125), after 1720

Copyist 3: Anonymous 13 (pp. 161–172), after 1720

Some parts of the manuscript (pp. 1–12, 20–52, 60–64, 93–120 and 127–136) were written over in a darker ink, probably by Anonymous 13.
INVENTORY Marchio Angeli (1720), no. 31 ?
NOTES The manuscript certainly dates from after 1671, when ‘Te Ioseph celebrent agmina caelitum’ (no. 27), a hymn in honour of St Joseph, was added to the Breviarium Romanum and subsequently to the Venetian ducal liturgy.
The reference to 1720 is due to the possible identification of the choirbook in an item of Marchio Angeli’s inventory (1720).

NOTES Not present in PD.

This hymn for the feast of St Joseph was inserted in the Roman Breviary in 1671, shortly after the elevation of the feast to Double of the Second Class by Pope Clement X (6 December 1670). The polyphonic setting is by Francesco Cavalli, then maestro di cappella at St Mark’s, or another composer of the Ducal Chapel.
