Commentary

On 31 January 1670 (1669 more veneto), Natale Monferrato received 100 ducats from the Procuratori de Supra for the dedication of a printed collection and a gift of three choirbooks with 4-voice music for the use of the Ducal Chapel. Two of these choirbooks contained one mass each and the other a Magnificat (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 146, fol. During his life, Monferrato published eight ‘a capella’ masses: six in his Missae ad usum cappellarum quattuor et quinque vocibus concinendae op. 13 (Venice: Giuseppe Sala, 1677. RISM A/I: M 3047), and two in his Messe et Magnificat a quattro voci op. 19 (Venice: Giuseppe Sala, 1681. RISM A/I: M 3051). Three published masses are transmitted in the two surviving choirbooks of the Ducal Chapel of St Mark’s. The four lost volumes may have contained the other five published masses. On 10 March 1678, the Procuratoria de Supra authorized payment to the copyist for a choirbook ‘in square notation’ with two 4-voice masses by Monferrato (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 147, fol. This payment is related to a surviving choirbook (Venice, Basilica di San Marco, Libri musicali 6). On the same occasion, the Procuratoria approved payment for another choirbook (now missing) with two further masses by Monferrato (fols 53v-54r: ‘nel scrivere due altre Messe in note quadrate composte da detto Maestro [= Monferrato] de carte quarantadoi’).

Commentary

On 25 July 1660, Giovanni Rovetta received 25 ducats for the composition of a mass and four Magnificats, together with purchase of paper, copying and binding (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 146, fol.
According to Paolo A. Rismondo, Pietro Francesco Caletti Bruni detto il Cavalli: tappe per una biografia, s.l., s.d., 2009, p. 447, the 11 volumes of masses was 'del Roetino' (by the 'Rovettino': Giovan Battista Rovetta): this interpretation of the original source is doubtful.

This entry probably refers to the choirbook ‘in carta reale’ copied by don Angelo Rigoni in the autumn of 1640: 'Che a don Angelo Rigoni crociffero sijno dati ducati 19, grossi 9, per sue mercedi di haver rescritto in musica in carta reale messe del maestro Monte Verde [c. 67v] et Palestrina et fattone carte 60 a Lire 2 la carta per servitio del coro della chiesa di San Marco │[De sì] 3 [de no] 0.' (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 144, sub data).

The missing choirbook may have contained the ‘a cappella’ mass published in Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale(Venice: Bartolomeo Magni, 1641. RISM A/I: M 3446) or that of the posthumous Messa a quattro voci, et salmi[…] (Venice: Alessandro Vincenti, 1650. RISM A/I: M 3447).

Commentary On 26 February 1671 (1670 more veneto), the Procurators of St Mark’s approved a payment in favour of the maestro di cappella Francesco Cavalli for the binding of a choirbook containing a 4-voice mass by Cavalli (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 146, fol. This payment was probably related to one of the three missing choirbooks.
On 5 July 1671, the Procurators of St Mark’s approved a payment for the composition of a 5-voice mass by Cavalli (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 146, fol. 147, fol. 6v). On the same occasion, payment for a third choirbook containing another 4-voice mass by Cavalli was appoved (Ibid.: ‘per saldo delle operazioni per l’addietro fatte nel scriver in notte quadrate […] altra Messa a quattro’).

One of the volumes mentioned in the inventory could be the choirbook ‘in carta reale’ purchased on 2 September 1614 by Friar ‘Florian’ of the convent of San Salvador: 'acquisto per 39 lire da tal fra’ Florian del convento di San Salvador un nuovo manoscritto musicale rilegato in foglio reale contenente opere del Palestrina' (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg.
Another choirbook ‘
in carta reale’ containing masses by Palestrina was copied in the autumn of 1640 by don Angelo Rigoni: 'Che a don Angelo Rigoni crociffero sijno dati ducati 19, grossi 9, per sue mercedi di haver rescritto in musica in carta reale messe del maestro Monte Verde [c. 67v] et Palestrina et fattone carte 60 a Lire 2 la carta per servitio del coro della chiesa di San Marco [De sì] 3 [de no] 0.' (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 144, 28 October 1640).

This entry refers to copies of two in-folio printed editions of Palestrina’s masses. Possible editions are:
1) Missarum liber secundus. Rome: eredi di Valerio & Aloisio Dorico, 1567. 1 choirbook in-folio. RISM A/I: P 660.
2) Missarum […] liber secundus. Rome: Nicolò Mutii, 1599. 1 choirbook in-folio. RISM A/I: P 662.

4) Missarum liber quintus. Rome: Francesco Coattino (Giacomo Berichia), 1590. 1 choirbook in-folio. RISM A/I: P 670.
5) Missarum […] liber quintus. Rome: Hubert Naich, 1599. 1 choirbook in-folio. RISM A/I: P 672.
The small books, also missing, may have been printed partbooks or manuscripts in-4° format. In April 1614, the new chapel master Claudio Monteverdi requested the purchase of two printed choirbooks of masses by Palestrina (books 2 and 5). One of the two missing choirbooks was repaired on 29 August 1671, by order of Francesco Cavalli (Venice, Archivio di Stato, Procuratoria de Supra, Chiesa, reg. 146, fol.

Commentary This entry probably represents a conflation of several print collections containing motets by Monferrato. Monferrato published seven individual collections, of which six are preserved. Two of these are dedicated to Procurators of St Mark’s:
1) Motetti concertati a due e tre voci op. 3. Venice: Francesco Magni, 1655. 4 partbooks. RISM A/I: M 3037. Dedicated to Giacomo Cornaro, Procurator of St Mark’s.
2) Id. (reprint). Venice: Francesco Magni, 1660. 4 partbooks. RISM A/I: M 3038.
3) Motetti concertati a due e tre voci op. 18. Venice: Giuseppe Sala, 1681. 4 partbooks. RISM A/I: M 3050. Dedicated to the Procurators of St Mark’s.
A copy of this last edition is kept in the music collection of the Basilica of St Mark’s. On 31 Janurary 1670 (1669 more veneto), the Procurators of St Mark’s awarded Monferrato the sum of 120 ducats for ‘alcuni libri in stampa di sue composizioni’. The reference is probably to the Motetti concertati a due e tre voci, published in 1669 without opus number or dedication (Venice: Francesco Magni. 4 partbooks. RISM A/I: M 3043). Other possible editions:
