NOTE

Denominated ‘Missa Tertia’ on the front cover of the choirbook. It is the first of the two masses published in Monferrato’s Messe et Magnificat a Quattro voci op. 19 (Venice: Sala, 1681), where it bears the indication ‘Messa Prima’ (Index). Comparison between the choirbook and the printed version of 1681 reveals a few minor differences (not systematically indicated in Jonathan R. J. Drennan’s critical edition). The choirbook is not the source of the printed edition, but probably a copy stemming from a common antigraph, partly revised by the composer between 1677 and 1681 (Collarile, Suono dell'eterno).

The ‘Missa Prima’ and ‘Missa Secunda’ of the choirbook series are not transmitted in the surviving sources. They may correspond to two of the five ‘a cappella’ masses transmitted in Monferrato’s printed mass collections of 1677 and 1681.

Text

Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

[Gloria in excelsis Deo]
Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis
Laudamus te
Benedicimus te
Adoramus te
Glorificamus te
Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam
Domine Deus Rex caelestis
Domine Pater omnipotens
Domine Fili unigenite Iesu Christe
Domine Deus Agnus Dei filius Patris
Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis
Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram
Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis
Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus
Tu solus altissimus Iesu Christe.
Cum Santo Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris.
Amen.

[Credo in unum Deum]
Patrem omnipotentem
Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum
Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum
Et vitam venturi saeculi.
Amen.

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus
Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua
Hosanna in excelsis.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
