NOTE
The choirbook transmits a re-elaboration of Giovanni Matteo Asola’s Turbe for Holy Tuesday, published in his Officium Maioris Hebdomadae of 1595 (Venice: Ricciardo Amadino – RISM A2506). In all probability, the re-elaboration was realized after the death of Giovanni Rovetta in 1668 but before the compilation of Choirbook 2 in 1682–1686 by the chapel master Natale Monferrato or another musician in the service of the Ducal Chapel. Asola’s original is notably shortened, and some voices are transposed (Collarile, Suono dell’eterno). The liturgical text differs in several respects (§§1, 2, 5, 12, 18, 24, 25 and 27) from the Evangelistary copied for St Mark’s around 1677 (EM, fols 64r–67r), which itself follows the version set out in the Vulgata Clementina of 1592. In a majority of cases (§§2, 5, 12, 18, 25 and 27), the variants originate in Asola’s setting of 1595. Two variants are specific to ms. 2. §1 contains a shortened version of the text: all other sources present a longer and concordant version. In ms. 2, the original § 24 (‘Ave Rex Iudaeorum’, fols 24v–25r) was eliminated, and strips of paper were glued over all four voices. The omission prompted the renumbering of subsequent sections. The original §24 is present in VC, Asola and EM. At present, it is impossible to establish when or why the section was eliminated.
